Rushmoor School are proud to be the 2016 winners of the Independent Schools Association's Award for outstanding provision in sport.
The role of Physical Education is integral in the development of each pupil at Rushmoor School. This is reflected both in the allocation of lessons within the timetable and the myriad of sports and sporting activities that are on offer to our pupils.
Our Physical Education programme is designed to encourage pupils to view sport as a central part of their lives, encompassing areas showing the long and short term role that exercise has to play in a healthy lifestyle. Sport has a very important place in our national and international culture and identity. We encourage our students to find and develop their own opinions, ideas and personalities; this is an important part of the development of all well rounded individuals.
The pathway of Sport at Rushmoor School is divided into key age group and ability areas, these are: Physical foundations, Skill Development and Lifelong continuation.
In the Juniors the programme focuses on ensuring that all pupils have the foundations of skill and fitness required to play any sport and lead a healthy lifestyle.
The lessons begin by looking at the fundamentals of all sports, not necessarily the specifics of individual sports. This helps the pupils to develop their Physical Literacy. After these building blocks have been created the pupils can be filtered towards the core sports of Rugby, Football, Cricket and Athletics.
When the students continue to physically develop, they get the opportunity to participate in any of the vast array of sports currently on offer to our pupils. We use expert teachers and coaches to deliver lessons which are vibrant and varied, giving the boys an opportunity to try new things which they may not have experienced before.
As they move through to Upper School the pupils are encouraged to experiment with new sports until they find a sport that they enjoy, can be passionate about, and can continue to develop long after they have left Rushmoor.
The Physical Education Department’s overriding goal is to develop the pupils’ understanding of sport and physical activity to the point where they are independent and autonomous with their learning. This stage can be achieved through participating, officiating or coaching. At Rushmoor we develop all styles of learning through a variety of teaching methods to ensure that all abilities, personalities and needs are not only catered for but nurtured. After all, 'individuals matter'.
