Literacy and communication are key skills. It is the aim of the English department that pupils develop these skills so that they can communicate effectively through the spoken word and written language. Good communication skills have a positive effect on learning across the curriculum and provide a sound support for success throughout life.
Our English curriculum provides a rich and stimulating language environment, where speaking and listening, and reading and writing are taught using a range of whole texts and extracts. By studying a range of literature, both fiction and non-fiction, the pupils are taught to write in a variety of genres and to structure text in a style suited to its purpose.
We aim to foster enthusiasm for reading, encouraging the pupils to read for pleasure and to evaluate and justify their preferences. This is supported by regular visits to our Learning Resources Centre and through our effective Reading Reward Scheme.
The English department is a committed team of teachers and support staff who continually reflect on good practice to ensure high quality teaching and provide a qualitative and varied learning environment where all can achieve.
